Karlštějn monumental castle towers above the shiny surface of the Berounka River as a silent witness of the most beautiful period in the history of the Czech lands.

Karlštejn was originally built by Charles IV as a treasure castle to house the coronation jewels of the Holy Roman Empire and, later on, the Czech royal crown of St. Wenceslas. The treasure was placed in the St. Cross Chapel – i.e. in the most beautiful part of the castle, decorated by semi-precious stones, gold, stars of Venetian glass, gold-plated chains and a unique portrait gallery of "all the heavenly troops" more than 500 years old.

The obverse side of the medal features a view of the castle with Charles IV coronation crown and the date 9. 6. 1348 in circumscription, i. e. the date of laying of the foundation stone.

The reverse side pictures a central view of the St. Cross Chapel and the gallery of panel paintings by Master Theodoricus. On the right, there is the figure of Charles IV freely adapted from the wall painting in the Church of the Assumption on Karlštejn. On the left from the ruler, there is the front and back side of Charles IV Golden Bull and in the centre his signature initials.
