Product description

The third mushroom to appear on the silver coin from the Czech Mint’s twelve-part mushroom series is the stinkhorn.

The pointed, bell-shaped cap of the stinkhorn is covered with a black-green spore-bearing layer—a slime that smells repulsive. The odor, reminiscent of a carcass, can be smelled in the forest from a distance of up to twenty meters. It attracts insects, which then spread the spores and help the mushroom reproduce. The mature mushroom is inedible, but the young, egg-shaped fruiting bodies are edible. In the past, they were used for ritual purposes- the phallic shape of the stinkhorn stimulates the human imagination.

The reverse side of the coin, designed by medalist Eva Prousková, DiS., features a colored depiction of the stinkhorn. The mushroom, with a fly perched on it, is set against the backdrop of a beech forest. On the obverse, designed by medalist Ludmila Kracíková, DiS., and shared by the entire series, you will find wild nature teeming not only with mushrooms but also with plants and animals. Because the Czech Mint’s coins are issued under a foreign license from the island of Niue, the obverse also bears its national coat of arms, the face value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), and the year of issue 2026.

You can store all twelve coins from the series titled Mushrooms in an elaborate collector’salbum, which is also available from the Czech Mint.
