Product description

The destruction of Pompeii, one of the most famous catastrophes of all time, is commemorated by a silver coin from CIT Coin Invest.

Magnificent villas, baths, temples, fertile fields, a bustling harbor… – Pompeii was the jewel of ancient Rome. Although a volcano once towered over the city, commanding respect, it had been dormant for generations, so people stopped taking it seriously. No one was prepared for the destruction that came in the year 79 AD. The force with which Mount Vesuvius erupted was unimaginable. The mixture of rock, ash, and gases ejected from the earth’s depths reached temperatures of up to 1,000 °C. It moved at speeds of several hundred kilometers per hour, leaving no escape. The volcano’s fury lasted three days, and the total amount of energy released was 100,000 times greater than that of the atomic explosion in Hiroshima. The work of destruction was completed by toxic fumes, earthquakes, and a tsunami. There was no help for the city and its inhabitants—sixteen thousand men, women, and children—who were buried under six meters of ash and rock… Centuries passed, and Pompeii was forgotten. In the 18th century, however, it was rediscovered and became a sensation. The city, preserved in time, provided archaeologists with a unique insight into the daily life of the ancient Romans—their culture, commerce, architecture, diet, and morals. At the same time, it became a chilling reminder of human hubris—a reminder that, compared to the power of nature, human civilization is nothing…

On the reverse side of the coin, which features extremely high relief, you will find Mount Vesuvius, whose eruption engulfs Pompeii—its orderly streets, shops, and gladiatorial arena. Since the coin is issued under license from the Cook Islands, the obverse side bears a portrait of King Charles III, the nominal value of 20 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2025.

The mintage consists of 499 pieces placed in an elegant case, in which you can display the coin.
