Product description
Freya, the famous goddess of the Norse pantheon, has been honored with her own silver coin.
Ancient sagas tell of a time, at the very dawn of time, when two powerful divine clans—the Aesir and the Vanir—waged war against one another. The cause of their conflict was powerful magic, which Freya of the Vanir understood better than anyone else. When the war ended, the sorceress was sent among the Aesir as a hostage to ensure that the peace would be lasting. Indeed, this came to pass, and the irreconcilable adversaries formed a single divine pantheon. Within it, Freya earned a privileged position as the goddess of fertility, beauty, and love, whom many a man desired. Besides lovers, however, she also protected warriors—while one half of those who fell in battle went to the ruler of the gods, Odin, the other half rested in Freya’s hall. As a powerful sorceress, Freya was also the goddess of magic known as seid. She could divine the future, traveled in a chariot drawn by two cats, and thanks to her magical cloak, she could transform into a falcon.
The reverse side of the coin depicts Freya in full armor, setting off for battle in her cat-drawn chariot as it races across the sky. The central motif, which is gilded, is surrounded by rich ornamentation inspired by the art of the ancient Vikings. Decorative motifs can also be found on the obverse side. Since the coin is issued under a foreign license from Equatorial Guinea, the obverse side also bears its national coat of arms, the nominal value of 2,000 FRANCS CFA, and the year of issue 2026.
The coin is the work of Le Grand Mint.
