Bedřich Hrozný was born in 1879 in Lysá nad Labem in the Lutheran priest`s family. At high school, he met with prominent Czech orientalist Justin Václav Prášek who sparked a passion for linguistics and history in the life of young Bedřich. Bedřich Hrozný mastered during high school in addition to Latin and Greek ten more oriental languages. Just before the First World War, he traveled to Turkey to investigate the mysterious inscriptions in the language, which revealed the German archaeologist Hugo Winckler. Hrozný dedicated to the unknown language also during the war when he worked as a staff clerk in Vienna and in 1915 he finally knew – he proved that the texts on cuneiform writing tables are written in Indo-European language of the Hittites. Soon he was able to decipher the language and his discovery is still recognized as one of the most important milestones of Oriental Studies of the 20th century.

Into a competition to design a new silver commemorative coin with a motif of deciphering Hittite by Bedřich Hrozný signed their works 20 experienced artists. The expert committee in cooperation with the Director of the Museum ofBedčich Hrozný in Lysá nad Labem finally selected for irealization the model of Vladimír Pavlica for its attractive graphical solutions, innovative style of the portrait and also interesting concept of the heraldic side. Pavlica embellished it with four cylinder seal, which Bedřich Hrozný discovered in ancient Kanes, and completed it with the three Czech heraldic animals. Composition completes the Bedřich Hrozný`s autograph, the inscription CZECH REPUBLIC and the nominal value of 200 CZK. The reverse side of the coin presents a very successful portrait of the famous orientalist emerging from the background formed by the wedge-shaped inscriptions. The scene complete texts "BEDŘICH HROUNÝ", "ROZLUŠTĚNÍ CHETITŠTINY", "1915" and "2015". The coin is a real masterpiece and a wonderful celebration of Czech craftsmanship that can not miss in your collection!
