Product description

Are you looking for a high-quality yet affordable gift that is guaranteed to surprise? Then the Czech Lion silver medal, struck from 2 grams of silver with the highest possible purity of 999.9/1000, is just the thing for you. Thanks to THINCUSE™ technology, we have managed to achieve a remarkable diameter of 37 millimetres!

On traditional medals or coins, you’ll find a relief that protrudes from the surface of the coin. So-called incuse strikes differ from these at first glance in that their design is recessed  - that is, below the surface of the coin. Such unusual coins were produced in antiquity, the Middle Ages, and also in the 19th and 20th centuries. Sometimes these were unintentional misstrikes. For example, during the reigns of the Habsburg emperors Francis II and Franz Joseph I, when machine coinage was being introduced, it sometimes happened that a correctly struck coin became jammed in the machine. When another blank was then inserted into the press, the die imprinted itself on one side of the blank, whilst the jammed coin was imprinted on the other. Such a blight had the same design on both sides - one in positive relief and the other in negative relief. On other occasions, intaglio striking was carried out deliberately. The design on the dollars commissioned by US President Theodore Roosevelt was recessed below the surface of the coin on both sides to prevent wear and ensure the coins had a longer lifespan. However, these coins did not remain in circulation for long – when the Spanish flu pandemic struck, people feared that dirt and microorganisms were trapped in their grooves. In the 21st century, intaglio striking is a rare occurrence - it gives coins and medals an unconventional appearance, and is therefore regarded as a technological and artistic rarity.

The dominant feature of the incuse medal, whose design is based on the Czech Mint’s popular investment coins dated 2026, is a realistically rendered Czech lion wearing the Crown of St Wenceslas. The beast, the work of the experienced medallist Vojtěch Dostál, DiS., stands out in vivid colours thanks to the colouring technique.

The mintage of the commemorative medal is unlimited.
