Product description

The second silver coin from the Czech Mint’s series paying tribute to the unbridled modern art is designed in the pop art style.

In the 1950s, a new artistic movement emerged in response to changes in the postwar world. Young artists who sought to challenge artistic traditions drew inspiration from commercial culture and consumer society. They incorporated widely recognized and popular elements into their works drawing from Hollywood films, mass media, advertisements, posters, photographs, labels, music, comic books, and the big-city lifestyle. What was their goal when they transferred motifs familiar from everyday life into exhibition halls? To blur the line between art and everyday life and to encourage people to take an unconventional look at ordinary things. In doing so, they used irony and exaggeration to take aim at modern society, its norms, and its clichés. Their visual language was distinctive and easily recognizable. It was characterized by rich, flat colors and bold outlines. It appeared cheap, mass-produced, and serialized, but thanks to its accessibility and appeal, it spread beyond galleries in the 1960s. Popular art or pop art went on to profoundly influence graphic design, from which it had previously emerged, and, thanks to its ability to appeal to a broad audience, it became one of the most significant artistic movements of the 20th century…

Medal designer ŠtěpánkaDoležalová dedicated the reverse side of the coin to a colorful comic-style illustration of a beautiful blonde whose surprised expression is complemented by the eye-catching inscription “WOW!” Since coins from the Czech Mint are issued with a foreign license from the island of Niue, the obverse side also features a portrait of King Charles III, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD), and the year of issue 2026.

The 100g silver coin has an unconventional shape. It is rectangular and resembles a poster or a painter’s canvas…
