The second gold coin with a nominal value of 5,000 CZK from the new cycle of the Czech National Bank, which is dedicated to the urban conservation areas of the Czech Republic, commemorates the beauty of Jihlava. The mintage excels in top-quality proof.

The village of Jihlava was originally a small market settlement, but in the mid-13th century - after the discovery of rich silver sources - it became a thriving cosmopolitan city, surpassed only by Prague. Mining experts, craftsmen and merchants came to the town from the most important European mining centres. The local entrepreneurs could afford to build expensive stone houses with arcades, and lavish churches were built as thanksgiving to God. Coins were also minted in Jihlava. Such wealth had to be guarded - the city was protected by massive fortifications, but it was also famous for its own set of legal norms. The lessons of Jihlava's mining law were later sought by Kutná Hora and became the basis for the famous code of King Wenceslas II. Although silver was dwindling, Jihlava was still the fourth most populous city in the kingdom in 1857. It is no wonder that the historic centre of the city was declared a city conservation area in 1982.

The winner of the art competition of the Czech National Bank was the medal maker Luboš Charvát. The expert committee praised in particular "the figure of the angel in the sky (from the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola) holding the city emblem in its Baroque form, and the elaborate collage of architectural monuments of the urban conservation area." The city's fortifications are visible around the angel, incorporating the heraldic animals of the Czech Republic.
