Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, was well-educated in mathematics, philosophy and astronomy; she spoke many languages and did not hesitate to personally command a war fleet. Although she relied primarily on her sharp intellect to achieve her political goals, she is often portrayed as a cunning seductress who wrapped the most powerful man of antiquity around her little finger. She decided to use her irresistible charm on Julius Caesar himself, whose help she needed to maintain her rule over Egypt after her husband’s death. The story of how she had herself smuggled into the Roman general’s chambers wrapped in a carpet has gone down in history. Enchanted, Caesar promised her his support and more besides – he became her lover and the father of her child, whom everyone knew as Caesarion. Their relationship, however, was doomed to failure. In order for Cleopatra to remain on the throne, she had to marry a pharaoh, whilst Caesar – who, for his part, was married to a prominent Roman woman – was treacherously murdered. Any hopes that Caesarion might become ruler of Rome were in vain. The heartbroken queen then found solace in the arms of another powerful Roman politician, Mark Antony, but this relationship, too, did not have a happy ending. It brought ruin to Cleopatra and the entire millennia-old Egyptian empire…

The reverse side of the coin depicts Caesar and Cleopatra in a passionate embrace. In the background behind them stands an Egyptian obelisk. The obverse side is dedicated to the essential attributes of the coin’s issuer, the state of Liberia – it bears its coat of arms, the nominal value of 500 DOLLARS (LRD) and the year of issue 2026.
