Wenceslas I, the son of Vratislav I and Drahomíra, grandson of the first Christian Prince Bořivoj, was raised a Christian by his grandmother St. Ludmila. After his father’s premature death his ambitious mother ruled over the country and Wenceslas was brought up by his grandmother Ludmila. The struggle for power and influence in the principality culminated with the murder of Ludmila in 921. When Wenceslas came of age in 924 or 925 he began to rule on his own. Faced with German invasions in 929, he submitted to the German king Henry I the Fowler. Only central Bohemia was under direct control of Wenceslas, while other parts of Bohemia were controlled by other princes. In 935 Wenceslas was murdered in Stará Boleslav at the initiative of his brother Boleslav I. The latter then conquered all of Bohemia, refused to recognize the emperor’s supremacy and gradually captured large territories in the east and laid the foundations of early medieval Bohemian empire in the 10^th century. Boleslav had the remains of his brother carried over to the Church of St. Vitus in Prague, which then became a renowned pilgrimage site.
