Product description
Exactly 50 years have passed since the first commercial flight of the legendary Concorde aircraft. To mark the occasion, The Royal Mint has issued a commemorative coin.
World War II brought extraordinary technological progress, and when post-war Europe began discussing the future of civilian air travel, it was clear that achieving supersonic speeds was only a matter of time. The result of an ambitious collaboration between France and Great Britain was the Concorde, which took to the skies in 1969. Its slender fuselage with a delta wing, a retractable nose, and four jet engines made the Concorde not only a technical marvel but also an aesthetic masterpiece. A symbol of the confident European aviation industry, it entered regular service in 1976 and most frequently connected London and Paris with New York. It covered the transatlantic journey in roughly three and a half hours, which was half as fast as conventional subsonic aircraft. Flying at a cruising speed exceeding Mach 2, it operated at an altitude of 18,000 meters. The luxurious interior with a limited number of seats targeted a niche group of passengers willing to pay for speed and prestige; however, high operating costs, noise limits, and restrictions on supersonic flight over land prevented its widespread adoption. Interest in tickets gradually declined, and the legend’s fate was ultimately sealed by a tragic accident. Although they have not flown since 2003, Concordes remain an icon of aviation…
On the reverse side of the coin, designed by the design studio Osborne Ross, you will find two views of the aircraft—from above and from the side. In the background is a map showing the flight route from Europe to America. The inscription CONCORDE is rendered in the style of airport signage. The obverse side of the coin features the issuer’s attributes—namely, the nominal value of 50 PENCE (GBP), a portrait of King Charles III, the text CHARLES III D G REX F D (Charles III, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith), and the year of issue 2026.
An integral part of the coin, created in collaboration with British Airways and Airbus, is special packaging filled with photographs and interesting facts (in English).
