Křivoklát, first mentioned around 1110, was founded in early middle ages as a Přemyslid fortification. During the reign of Přemysl Otakar I and at the beginning of Wenceslas I period, around 1230, it was rebuilt into a large, monumental castle. The castle was shaped into its present form by centuries of complicated historical development.

The castle was damaged by fire several times, witnessed robbing, as well as many adaptations by various rulers and, sometimes, rather unfortunate reconstructions. A grand reconstruction by Vladislav Jagellonský turned Křivoklát into one of the most magnificent royal residences in central Europe.

Vladislav’s coat-of-arms, crowned W, carved in stone, decorates the stone entrance to the castle until the present day. In the 20^th century, the castle underwent an extensive restoration which saved it for future generations.

The reverse side of the medal features Vladislav Jagellonský’s coat-of-arms with the dominating W (which stands for the first letter in this ruler’s name in Polish – Wladislav).
